HBO Max Releases Trailer for Harry Potter’s 20th Anniversary Special

Hold on to your brooms - Harry Potter and the gang are back!

Happy December 11, fellow Potterheads! Today marks the day that Hermione Granger brewed Polyjuice Potion in Moaning Myrtle's bathroom, and who knows...she could still be using that potion today while secretly lurking amongst us!

Growing up, have you ever fantasized about receiving your Hogwarts acceptance letter, so you could join the magical wizarding world inhabited by Harry, Ron and Hermoine? (because, same).

While we have made peace with the fact that we are, in fact, mere muggles and accepted that the only Hogwarts we will set foot in is the one in our dreams (and screens and books), HBO Max is providing us with something almost as good: an invitation to the highly anticipated Harry Potter reunion, accompanied by a new trailer. The special will celebrate the 20th anniversary since the release of the first movie in the franchise: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

News of this reunion dropped a few months ago, but this trailer provides a first glance of the upcoming event. The trailer doesn’t reveal actual footage from the reunion itself, but does provide us with lots of Potter-esque imagery: A reader’s face is masked by the popular wizarding newspaper -“The Daily Prophet” - with the headline “Hogwarts welcomes back alumni”. We see a letter addressed to Robbie Coltrane (aka Hagrid) and Matthew Lewis (aka Neville), sealed with the infamous Hogwarts stamp, inviting them to the HBO Max special. We are also granted snippets of the notorious platform 9 ¾, where Mark Williams (aka Arthur Weasley) is on what we can assume is the Hogwarts Express.

What else do we know about the anniversary event? It premiers on HBO Max on New Year's Day (Janurary 1st, 2022) and will include the golden trio - Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, as well as many others, like: Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Isaacs, Gary Oldman, Tom Felton, James Phelps, Oliver Phelps, Bonnie Wright, Alfred Enoch, Evanna Lynch, and Matthew Lewis, among others. J.K. Rowling is not expected to make an appearance. Of the special, HBO max has released the following statement:

“The retrospective special will tell an enchanting making-of story through all-new in-depth interviews and cast conversations, inviting fans on a magical first-person journey through one of the most beloved film franchises of all time."

See you at the reunion, Potterheads!
